Leah Siegel fought hard against cancer, enduring blood transfusions and chemical burns and painful sores. She was haunted by the idea that her children would grow up without any memory of her.

Patients who are over-prescribed antibiotics may develop drug resistance that lasts up to a year. This puts both them and the larger population at risk.

The more antibiotics are prescribed for coughs and flu-like illnesses, the more bacteria become resistant in a vicious cycle.

According to Reuters:

“Medical experts say overuse of antibiotics in Europe, the United States and other wealthy regions is building widespread resistance in and threatening vital medical treatments from hip replacements and cancer therapies, to intensive care.” PostID=267666″

Urinary tract infections are becoming difficult to treat as a result of growing resistance to antibiotic drugs.

The problem is caused by the overuse of antibiotics in the farming industry, which then enter the food chain.

BBC News reports:

“… researchers examined Escherichia coli bacteria, which are responsible for the vast bulk of human urinary tract infections. (UTIs). Looking at samples from humans and animals they found an identical gene for antibiotic resistance was present.” PostID=267554″

The total number of antibiotics used in agriculture in the U.S. is still on the rise. The Union of Concerned Scientists alleges that 70 percent of this use is in animals that are vulnerable to disease due to crowded and unsanitary conditions.

This over-use of antibiotics is creating resistant bacteria, which kills 63,000 Americans each year.

Writing in the New York Times, Donald Kennedy, a former commissioner of the United States Food and Drug Administration, notes that:

“Agribusiness argues — as it has for 30 years — that livestock need to be given antibiotics to help them grow properly and keep them free of disease. But consider what has happened in Denmark … when that country banned the use of antibiotics in farm animals except for therapeutic purposes. “Abilify” is a new ‘add-on’ drug that’s supposed to help enhance other anti-depressants. The first video is their official commercial — they basically say that your standard anti-depressants aren’t enough, so you should take another drug as well.

In the second video, Andy Behrman, a former spokesman for Abilify and Bristol Myers Squibb, discusses his side effects from Abilify. He stopped taking the drug in order to avoid the final side effects — coma and death.
